Members of the Centralia School District community gathered on November 8, 2016 to commemorate the service of Trustee Dennis Salts as he retires from the Centralia School District’s Governing Board after 14 years of service.

Trustee Salts was first appointed to the Centralia School District Governing Board to complete the term of retiring Trustee Robert Lindsay during the 2003-04 school year.  During his tenure, he has served as the Board Clerk, Clerk Pro Tem and Board President.

During Salts’s tenure as Trustee, the district has seen tremendous changes including the closing of Walter Knott School and its reopening as an Education Center as well as the transformation of classroom instruction with the addition of over 2,000 technology devices for student use. His time of service in the Centralia School District has also seen continued academic success of all of its schools, including two being named Gold Ribbon Schools, three California Distinguished Schools, two Title I Achieving Schools, and all eight receiving honors from the California Business for Educational Excellence.

Centralia School District Superintendent Norma Martinez shared that, “Dennis Salts has been an ambassador of the District. He is always one who loves to share the accomplishments Centralia School District’s schools and staff with the greater community.  His dedication to our District will be missed.”

In addition to being lauded by current Board Trustees; Connor Traut, Arturo Montez, Steve Harris and Henry Charoen, Trustee Salts was celebrated by members of the community and district. In attendance was retired Centralia Superintendent Dr. Diane Scheerhorn, as well as former Trustees Megan Harding, Lisa Jordan and Irv Trinkle.  During the November 8th meeting, Trustee Salts received proclamations from Orange County Supervisor Shawn Nelson and Assemblywoman Young Kim.

Board President Traut thanked Trustee Salts for his dedicated service and stewardship of Centralia School District.  Said Trustee Salts, “I will always have fond memories of my time serving as a trustee for Centralia. It has been both gratifying and challenging. I feel great pride for what our Centralia team has accomplished. Our students, teachers, classified employees and administrators work wonders to ensure that we are helping each student to be the best they can be. It has been a pleasure serving the community in my role as a Trustee.”

Dennis Salts will continue to be an active member of the Buena Park community as he currently serves as a Trustee for the Buena Park Library District and member of the Buena Park Rotary.

Salvador De La Rosa sits back in a fully reclined dental chair and opens his mouth wide.

A dental hygienist looks over him, scraping plaque and polishing each tooth. Beside them are a laptop, X-ray equipment, dental tools and a suction unit – everything you’d see at a dentist office.

But outside kids are running around and playing. A loud school bell rings.

Salvador, 11, walked across the hall from his classroom at Danbrook Elementary and into the makeshift dentist’s office in another classroom to get his teeth cleaned.

The dental visit and cleaning is part of a new free pilot teledentistry program by Garden Grove-based Healthy Smiles For Kids of Orange County.
